If you trade in the aluminum scrap market, you've likely come across the term "Troma." It appears often in supplier offers, trade listings and shipping documents — but it is frequently misunderstood.

Troma Is a Trade Description, Not an Alloy Standard

Troma refers to clean, cast aluminum automobile wheel scrap. It describes the physical form and general origin of the material — cast wheels removed from vehicles, sorted and cleaned of tires, valves and steel components — rather than a certified chemical specification.

This distinction matters. A supplier offering "Troma" is describing what the material looks like and where it came from, not guaranteeing its exact alloy composition.

How Troma Relates to A356 / A356.2

Most cast automobile wheels are manufactured from aluminum-silicon casting alloys in the A356 family, which is why Troma is commonly associated with A356 or A356.2 specification. In practice, however, wheel scrap can include a mix of alloys, coatings and minor contamination depending on sorting quality.

Target Alloy: A356 / A356.2 Series, subject to chemical analysis.

This is why JACE treats the A356 / A356.2 designation as a target specification to be confirmed — not an automatic guarantee — for every shipment of Troma material.

Why Chemical Analysis Matters

Because Troma is a description of form rather than a certified alloy, responsible buyers and traders confirm composition before finalizing a transaction. Depending on the order, this may include:

  • XRF (X-ray fluorescence) spot testing of representative samples
  • Third-party laboratory analysis via providers such as SGS or Intertek
  • Visual and physical inspection at loading

Not every shipment requires every method — inspection is scoped to the order size, buyer requirement and relationship with the supplier.

What This Means for Buyers

If you are sourcing Troma or aluminum wheel scrap generally, ask for the target alloy, the physical condition, and what verification has been — or will be — performed. A supplier who can answer these questions clearly is generally a more reliable long-term partner than one offering only a price.
